UN Academic Impact Hub Sparking climate protection: Heidelberg joins UN network

Universität Heidelberg Appointed Vice-Chair for Research of the UN Academic Impact Hub on “SDG 13: Climate Action”

Heidelberg University has been named one of three European universities appointed to the United Nations’ “UN Academic Impact SDG Hubs” network. As part of this initiative, academic institutions around the world form cooperative alliances, known as “hubs”, for each of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting joint action towards sustainable development. Heidelberg University has been appointed Vice-Chair for Research of the SDG 13 Hub “Climate Action”.

The SDG Hubs of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) initiative unite the research efforts of leading universities around the world in support of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. They highlight the essential role that science plays in promoting sustainable development and supporting the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda. As Vice-Chair for Research of the SDG 13 Hub, Heidelberg University will work alongside Universidad Nacional de Rosario (Argentina) to help shape the scientific agenda for the “Climate Action” objective. The aim is to strengthen international collaboration in climate research, initiate innovative research projects, and promote knowledge exchange between science, policy, and society. Other universities involved in this hub include the University of the West Indies (Jamaica), the University of Campinas (Brazil), and Abdullah Gül University (Turkey).

At the Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE), and in other research networks at the university, key questions on climate change are being explored – from the analysis of atmospheric processes to societal transformation. Heidelberg University is also involved in numerous international partnerships for providing scientific knowledge for sustainable development and developing innovative solutions for climate protection. This three-year appointment to the SDG 13 Hub leadership team provides Heidelberg University with new opportunities to share its research globally and play an active role in implementing the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda.
