LANGUAGE PREPARATION AT HEIDELBERG UNIVERSITY

College for German Language and Culture at the International Study Centre (Internationales Studienzentrum, ISZ)

The College for German Language and Culture at the International Study Centre offers intensive German courses consisting of at least 20 hours of teaching per week. Courses are available at a range of levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced; A1-C1) Courses of certain levels prepare students to sit the DSH test (German language test for the admission to universities), or the entrance examination for the college.

To qualify for participation in any of the German courses, students must have the right to complete a degree programme at a university.

There are two ways to apply for a place on a German course:

  1. Those interested in studying at the University (first or consecutive course of study) who wish to spend one or two semesters learning German before beginning their studies, may apply directly to the College for German Language and Culture at the ISZ. In this case, the application is for a place on the German course only. Students must submit a separate application to study at the University.
  2. Alternatively, prospective students can submit an application for a place on a German course to the International Relations Office, at the same time as applying for a place to study at the University. The German course will have a duration of at least one semester. The degree programme can be begun only after the DSH test has been successfully completed. Because the International Relations Office can offer only a very limited number of places for the German courses available, applicants have no legal claim to a place. Please note that this application process is open to applicants to full degree programmes only. All other applicants must apply directly to the International Relations Office for a place on a German course. Such applications cannot be combined with an application for a place on a degree programme at the University.

Please note that you may only make use of one of these application processes in order to apply for a place on a German course at the International Relations Office. It is not possible to submit an application for a place on a German course to the International Relations Office (cf. 2), and simultaneously apply to the University for a place on a German course at the International Relations Office (cf. 1).

It is equally prohibited to complete an intensive German course at the College for German Language and Culture whilst completing a degree programme at the University.
