The application requirements for applicants who are citizens of European Union (EU) member states or of the European Economic Area (EEA) are essentially the same as those for German citizens. The same conditions also apply for international applicants with a German university entrance qualification/Abitur from Germany or from a German international school (so-called “Bildungsinländer”).
Places for study of subjects which are considered particularly challenging, or for which specific skills or aptitudes are considered necessary, are allocated by the University exclusively on the basis of an entrance examination procedure.
In courses of study with an entrance examination, proof of additional qualifications is linked to the admission. Information on the additional qualifications required can be found in the subject-specific selection rules and admission regulations. If not regulated in the subject-specific selection and admission regulations the subject-specific study and examination regulations may also stipulate the access and admission requirements to be fulfilled. Further details can be found in the corresponding regulations.
If you are an EU/EEA citizen or international student with a German university entrance qualification, the application process for any subject which uses the entrance examination procedure requires that you submit both general, and subject-specific documentation via Heidelberg University’s online application portal by the given deadline.
The application takes place exclusively online in the applicant portal of Heidelberg University. Therefore, please have all required documents ready for the application as an uploadable pdf document. Please note that only legible documents can be evaluated. The application deadline is a statutory deadline.
Winter Semester: 01.06. - 15.07.
The University allocates study places in accordance with the provisions of the Baden-Württemberg State Higher Education Act and the applicable subject-specific selection regulations/admission regulations or study and examination regulations.
Following successful admission, you will receive a request to accept your university place within a deadline displayed there in your heiCO account before you are able to continue with online registration. If you do not accept your university place by the deadline, your entitlement to the place will lapse.

Places for study of subjects which are considered particularly challenging, or for which specific skills or aptitudes are considered necessary, are allocated by the University exclusively on the basis of an entrance examination procedure. Regardless of whether or not a degree programme is admission-restricted, the entrance examination procedure indicates the applicant’s suitability for the programme, as well as his or her motivation for study.
Anyone who does not fulfil the minimum requirements for study of the given subject, will not be admitted to the relevant degree programme at Heidelberg University. Regardless of their nationality and the university entrance qualification they hold (i.e. German or non-German), all applicants must complete the entrance examination procedure. All applicants looking to transfer to such a degree programme must also take part in the entrance examination procedure. It is not possible to submit an application for special consideration for a subject with an entrance examination procedure. Any such applications will not be considered.
The number of university places is not limited in advance, but is instead determined by the number of applicants who successfully complete the entrance examination procedure. All applicants who fulfil the requirements as tested in the entrance examination or study and examination regulation, are considered suitable for completion of the degree programme and will thus be admitted for study.
Possible selection criteria include:
The criteria considered are set out in the regulations for the entrance examination procedure or in the study and examination regulation for the relevant subject. Applications must be made directly to the University.
Applicants may not take part in the entrance examination procedure more than twice. Where selection interviews or tests must be completed, please ensure that you find out well in advance when these will take place. Due to the large volume of applications, invitations to interviews or tests may be sent at short notice.
Admission requirements for undergraduate degree programmes (leading to a Bachelor's degree or state examination) at Heidelberg University are, in principle, a higher education entrance qualification and very good German language skills, which must be proven at the latest upon enrolment.
When assessing foreign educational certificates, Heidelberg University follows the assessment suggestions of the Central Office for Foreign Education.
