Places for study of subjects which are considered particularly challenging, or for which specific skills or aptitudes are considered necessary, are allocated by the University exclusively on the basis of an entrance examination procedure. Regardless of whether or not a degree programme is admission-restricted, the entrance examination procedure indicates the applicant’s suitability for the programme, as well as his or her motivation for study.
The university allocates places according to the criteria specified in the selection and admission regulations. If not regulated in the subject-specific selection and admission regulations the subject-specific study and examination regulations may also stipulate the access and admission requirements to be fulfilled. Further details can be found in the corresponding regulations.
As part of your application for a subject with an entrance examination, you will be required to submit general and subject-specific documents online.
The application takes place exclusively online in the applicant portal of Heidelberg University. Therefore, please have all required documents ready for the application as an uploadable pdf document. Please note that only legible documents can be evaluated. The application deadline is a statutory deadline.
Winter Semester: 01.06. - 15.07.
The main selection procedure for the first academic semester in first degree programmes (Bachelor’s degree/state examination) is generally completed within four to five weeks following the deadline for application.
Following successful admission, you will receive a request to accept your university place within a deadline displayed there in your heiCO account before you are able to continue with online registration. If you do not accept your university place by the deadline, your entitlement to the place will lapse.
Registration will then take place online.

Anyone who does not fulfil the minimum requirements for study of the given subject, will not be admitted to the relevant degree programme at Heidelberg University. Regardless of their nationality and the university entrance qualification they hold (i.e. German or non-German), all applicants must complete the entrance examination procedure. All applicants looking to transfer to such a degree programme must also take part in the entrance examination procedure. It is not possible to submit an application for special consideration for a subject with an entrance examination procedure. Any such applications will not be considered.
The number of university places is not limited in advance, but is instead determined by the number of applicants who successfully complete the entrance examination procedure. All applicants who fulfil the requirements as tested in the entrance examination or study and examination regulation, are considered suitable for completion of the degree programme and will thus be admitted for study.

The criteria considered are set out in the regulations for the entrance examination procedure or study and examination regulations for the relevant subject. Applications must be made directly to the University.
Applicants may not take part in the entrance examination procedure more than twice. Where selection interviews or tests must be completed, please ensure that you find out well in advance when these will take place. Due to the large volume of applications, invitations to interviews or tests may be sent at short notice.
Please note: All degree programmes at Heidelberg University have specific admission and degree requirements. Depending on the specific nature of your university entrance qualification, there may be restrictions on the range of subjects you will be able to study. In addition to this, there may be subject-specific application and submission deadlines or mandatory aptitude tests. Applicants may also be required to submit additional, specific documents as part of the application procedure for certain degree programmes.
