INTERNATIONAL STUDENTSENROLMENT IN HIGHER ACADEMIC SEMESTERS

Note on the application for the winter semester 2023/24

BACHELOR’S, STATE EXAMINATION AND MASTER’S DEGREE PROGRAMMES

International applicants who have been admitted to study at Heidelberg University must apply for enrolment for all degree programmes at Studentadministration by the deadline specified in their letter of admission.

To do this, enrol online and send all the required documents listed below to

If your letter of admission requires the successful participation in an examination procedure, the respective examination (e.g. German language test for the admission to universities (DSH)) must be passed with the specified score. If the examination is not passed, or if the minimum required score is not achieved, and you have not been granted an official exemption, you will not be permitted to enrol in the degree programme specified in the letter of admission.

THE DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR ENROLMENT ARE:

  • Proof of health insurance for enrollment process. Further information can be found on the instruction sheet: Health Insurance and Liability Insurance
  • Officially certified copy of the travel passport (students from countries with visa requirements for Germany must have a passport with a visa/residence permit for study purposes for the specific course of study at Heidelberg University.  Students who have an electronic residence permit must also present the supplementary sheet with the auxiliary regulations for enrolment), or in case of EU/EEA citizenship: officially certified copy of the identity card (front and back).
  • Certificate of exmatriculation from the most-recently attended university.
  • For enrolment in Bachelor’s/State examination programmes in the 4th semester or higher:  Proof of a passed orientation examination or a certificate of equivalence for any credits already gained.For the 7th semester or higher: Proof of the passed intermediate examination or a certificate of equivalence issued by the academic advisory services of the respective subject at Heidelberg University.

    In addition, admitted international applicants must also submit the following documents:

    • Application for enrollment 
    • Copy of the letter of admission
    • Passport photo
    • If they have not yet been submitted as part of the application: Officially certified copies of the school reports relevant for admission and, if applicable, of university certificates, including, if applicable, officially certified copies of certified translations into German or English
    • Any additional documents that may have been specified in the letter of admission.

    Furthermore, international prospective students with a German university entrance qualification require the following documents for enrolment in Bachelor/State examination degree programmes without admission restrictions in higher semesters:

    • Personally signed printed copy of the online enrolment application (see above)
    • Officially certified copy of the school leaving certificate (Abitur)
    • Officially certified copies of all transcripts of records for each semester or year of study. If original documents are not available in English or German, applicants must also provide an official translation into German or English.
    • Certificates of enrolment or alternative proof of all academic semesters completed or currently in progress at a university in Germany must be provided. Any proof should include the subject, academic semester, and the level of study (degree type).
    • Certificate issued by the previous university’s respective examination office stating that the applicant has not lost his/her entitlement to take examinations in the chosen, or neighbouring, subject. This applies to individual examinations, intermediate examinations as well as the final examination. If original documents are not available in English or German, applicants must also provide an official translation into German and English.
    • When transferring to Heidelberg University from a foreign university or from another university in Germany: Certificate of Transferable Grades of the respective department’s examination office at Heidelberg University.
    • Prospective international students who nonetheless require a notice of admission (for example, for a visa application to study in Germany) are able to request that a notice of admission is issued at the point of matriculation.

    Furthermore, international prospective students with a German university entrance qualification require the following documents for enrolment in access-restricted Master’s degree programmes in higher semesters:

    • Personally signed printed copy of the online enrolment application (see above)
    • Original of the letter of admission for a higher academic semester issued by the faculty representative of the Master's program of your choice (in the case of transfer to Heidelberg University from a foreign or domestic university with academic semester ranking).
    • Officially certified copy or transcript of the applicant’s school leaving certificate, or qualification that permits university entrance in the applicant’s country of origin (e.g Abitur, High School Diploma, Matura etc.). This must include a list of the individual grades achieved. If the original documents are not available in English or German, applicants must also provide an officially certified translation in English or German.
    • In addition, where applicable: A copy of the applicant’s diploma from a preparatory course in Germany, proving successful completion of an assessment test to determine the eligibility of foreign applicants for study at institutions of higher education in Germany. This must include an overview of the individual grades achieved.
    • In addition, where applicable: Officially certified copies of the certificates or diplomas proving the successful completion of university entrance examinations in the applicant’s country of origin. These must include an overview of the individual grades achieved. If the original documents are not available in English or German, applicants must also provide an officially certified translation in English or German.
    • Officially certified copies of all university diplomas and transcripts of records for each semester or year of study. If original documents are not available in English or German, applicants must also provide an official translation into German or English.
    • Certificates of enrolment or alternative proof of all academic semesters completed or currently in progress at a university in Germany must be provided. Any proof should include the subject, academic semester, and the level of study (degree type).
    • Certificate issued by the previous university’s respective examination office stating that the applicant has not lost his/her entitlement to take examinations in the chosen, or neighbouring, subject.     ENROLMENT OR CHANGE OF DEGREE PROGRAMME?

    If you are already enrolled at Heidelberg University, you are not required to re-enrol. Instead, you must go to the Administrative Office for International Students where your change of degree programme can be registered. 
    Before applying for a change of degree programme, you are strongly advised to discuss this with the student advisory services for international students (room 30).
