Master’s degree programmes

For Master's degree programmes or subjects with admission restrictions and without admission restrictions in higher semesters, the application must be submitted in due time before enrolment. After receiving a letter of admission, you can enrol at Heidelberg University within the set enrolment deadlines.

Enrolment takes place digitally via the online portal heiCO.  Please find out in advance which procedure your desired subject is assigned to.

Enrolment in Master’s degree programmes

If you have applied for admission to a higher semester of a Master's programme, you will find your admission or rejection notice in your applicant account.

If you are admitted, you will receive a request in your heiCO account to accept your university place within a specified deadline. If you do not accept the offer by this deadline, your entitlement to the place will expire.

After accepting your place, you can continue with online registration by uploading the required documents. In a further step, the necessary documents, including the registration application available on the heiCO platform, must be submitted to the Student Administration Office by the stated deadline.

To complete your enrollment, please proceed as follows:

  • Have your documents ready in PDF format as well as relevant information such as your health insurance number.
  • Follow the instructions provided in the heiCO application platform.
  • Finalize the document “Application for enrollment” by clicking "Add data", then print the enrollment application, sign it, and re-upload the complete document including your original signature.v

Please keep the following documents at hand to upload them as PDF files for your registration:

  • University entrance qualification (e.g. German ‘Abitur’) –If your diploma was issued under a name you no longer hold, please also submit a respective official certificate detailing your name change.
  • 1 passport photo
  • Identity card/passport
  • Proof of health insurance
    Please keep your health insurance details at hand and fill in the information during your registration in heiCO.
    Your insurance status will generally be transmitted electronically. After entering your data in heiCO, you must always contact a statutory German health insurance company to request transfer of your insurance status to the University of HD under number H0003588 – even if you have private insurance. This process will take up to 5 working days. You will only be enrolled after electronic transmission of the statutory health insurance has been completed. In return, the university will report the start and – later – the end of your course of studies to the health insurance companies.
  • An officially certified copy of the Bachelor’s degree diploma (or other diploma from an equivalent undergraduate degree programme.) Diplomas from foreign institutions must be submitted as an officially certified copy of the original diploma with an official translation into German or English. Please note that certification by foreign entities cannot be accepted. 
    Students who have not yet received their final transcript of records by the time of enrolment in the Master’s degree programme may submit a preliminary certificate from the examinations office at their institution. This certificate must state that the degree programme has been completed and indicate the overall grade point average. 
    Please submit the final degree certificate at the latest by the start of the re-registration period for the semester after the semester of enrolment.
  • The University’s letter of admission
  • For the Master of Education: notification of admission for both degree programme components of the Master of Education course and, where applicable, proof of successful completion of any outstanding examination elements stated on the notification of admission and required for enrolment in the Master of Education.
  • For sport science: Proof of having passed the Sport Entrance Examination
  • For a change from or after the 3rd academic semester, evidence of using the academic advisory services
  • Any further documents and certificates mentioned in your letter of admission/ your heiCO account

If you have previously enrolled at another German university, you must also submit the following online:

  • Detailed certificate of exmatriculation from the last university attended. A detailed certificate of exmatriculation documents your registration period (start/end of your course of studies), the degree programme (department/academic semesters/degree, any changes of degree programme) to us. If any one or several of these items is/are not included on the certificate of exmatriculation, you can provide them by other evidence from the university, to be submitted in addition to the certificate of exmatriculation, e.g., confirmation of periods of studies/certificate of enrolment, etc.
  • All examination certificates related to previous registrations
  • Evidence of any leaves of absence and semesters abroad. In case of a leave of absence, we will require proof from the university in which semester you had taken a leave of absence (certificate of enrolment, etc.) – For a semester abroad (semesters during which you were only registered abroad), please submit evidence of the period (start and end) of your study abroad.

 

Please note that the documents, that have to be submitted for your registration must be received by Heidelberg University by the deadline stated in your letter of admission.

 

Picking up your student identity card

Once you are enrolled, you will receive an e-mail informing you that you can pick up your student ID card at the earliest five working days after having received and activated the student ID at the University Administration. You can only collect your student identity card if you show up in person and present an official photo ID (e.g. ID card or passport). Please note that the Uni-ID is allocated at the earliest from 1 February for the summer semester and at the earliest from 1 August for the winter semester.

Enrolment or change of degree programme?

If you are currently enrolled at Heidelberg University, it is not necessary to re-register or re-enrol in the Master’s degree programme – but you must officially change your degree programme.
