Course Content

The degree programme component in Russian aims to consolidate and further develop students’ Russian language skills, and expand their knowledge in the fields of Russian linguistics, literature and cultural studies. Particular focus is placed on equipping students with the specialist didactic skills and knowledge they require to teach these aspects of Russian language and culture. The combination of specialist subject knowledge, language and didactic skills which the course provides, enables graduates to deliver informative and effective foreign language lessons to schoolchildren.

Course Structure

The degree programme component in Russian consists in modules on didactics and on theory and methodology.

Theory and methodology modules:

The subject specific element of the course consists in a module focussing on Russian language acquisition, and a module addressing Russian linguistics and literature.

Didactic modules:

Specialised didactics for Russian: In this module, students learn how to present the knowledge they have acquired throughout their course of study in a way which aides pupils’ learning. Students learn how to teach material in ways which are appropriate for learners of different abilities.

Preparation for and review of practical semester in a school (SPS): The first part of the block course prepares students for different aspects of the practical semester spent in a school. In the second part of the block course, students are able to reflect on their experiences, and secure the skills they have gained by revising their lesson plans, and their own attitude to their career in teaching (self-competence).

Blended module:

This module serves to integrate specialist subject knowledge with specialised didactics. The module is centred around a particular phenomenon within language learning, and has a specific thematic focus. The aim of the module is to consider how this content might be taught in view of any intercultural concerns, the challenges of teaching a foreign language to a mixed-ability class, the possibility of using different mediums and methods, and the use of practice exercises and/or teaching units.
