Philosophy is at times viewed as abstract discussion of life’s “big questions”. Although students of philosophy do discuss topics which one might consider life’s “big questions”, they first gain the methods and skills they need to consider these issues in detail. This includes the art of rational argumentation, and informed reading of central philosophical texts.

Course Content
When studying the supplementary subject Philosophy/Ethics, students will acquire the scientific teaching qualification for the subject of philosophy or philosophy/ethics in addition to the two subjects they have chosen for their Bachelor’s degree with teaching degree option and their Master of Education. Students will be able to teach at Gymnasium secondary schools, comprehensive, or vocational schools later, including secondary school level II. Graduates of the degree programme will have the specialised philosophical and philosophy-didactic skills to initiate and design educational processes in the subject of philosophy or philosophy/ethics.
Course Structure
Students will cover specialised and specialised didactics contents in 15 modules. Heidelberg’s study profile includes allowing students to pursue their studies as independently as possible - in compliance with the goals of the teaching profession - and to offer them the most diverse teaching options possible. Available options range from ethics and applied methods to fundamental questions of theoretical philosophy and metaphysics. Of course, subjects from throughout the history of philosophy will be covered as well. The supplementary subject for the Master course ends with a Master’s thesis at a scope of about 50 pages.
The subject of philosophy can be studied at a scope of 90 credit points (standard period of study 3 semesters) or of 120 credit points (standard period of study 4 semesters).
