Philosophy is at times viewed as abstract discussion of life’s “big questions”. Although students of philosophy do discuss topics which one might consider life’s “big questions”, they first gain the methods and skills they need to consider these issues in detail. This includes the art of rational argumentation, and informed reading of central philosophical texts.

The academic programme is the continuation of the 2-subject Bachelor's degree programme in philosophy with the career goal of becoming a philosophy teacher at a German secondary school (Gymnasium). Therefore, there is a greater emphasis on specialised didactics, practical education and education studies with theoretical/methdological components primarily conveyed in two main seminars in systematic philosophy or history of philosophy.
In order to consolidate and expand on the theoretical knowledge and ways of thinking acquired in the Bachelor’s programme, in particular with a view to their relevance in the classroom, students take the following two basic modules in their first semester: In basic module 1a), students freely select a theoretical/methodological main seminar (8 CP) and in basic module 1b) a main seminar on specialised didactics in philosophy (5 CP). In the so-called ‘blended module’, normally taken in the 2nd or 3rd semester, students complete a theoretical/methodological main seminar (8 CP) and a further main seminar, three weekly contact hours (6 CP) in which theoretical/methodological knowledge is blended with specialised didactics.
In the module accompanying the practical semester in a school, students attend a specialised didactics block course (4 CP) that covers and consolidates the main topics of the practical semester. The practical semester normally takes place in the 2nd or 3rd semester.
If students want to complete their Master's thesis in philosophy/ethics, they must also take the final module (15 CP) in the 4th semester.
