Course Content

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Molecular Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary course of study in which students will receive a broad education in the natural sciences and will learn the fundamentals of subjects ranging from biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics to molecular and cell biology, pharmacology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and process technology. In the third semester, students will select one of the following specialisations: bioinformatics, biophysical chemistry, or substance research. In both course instruction and research, students will obtain knowledge of the latest developments in biomedical research, including findings from genome and proteome research, gene technology, bioinformatics, substance development, diagnostics, and biomedicine. Students may additionally enrol in courses that impart key competencies, such as scientific English, rhetoric, and presentation and management technologies.

Course Structure

The first four semesters will be devoted to a broad-based fundamental education in the natural sciences, covering the areas of chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and bioinformatics, as well as computer methodology and process technology. Students will work their way through a concentrated programme of study made up of lectures, seminars, and internships.  

In the fifth semester, students will have the opportunity to select a specialisation from one of the three core areas of substance research, bioinformatics, or biophysical chemistry. This specialisation will be an area of particular focus, including a research project.  

In the sixth semester, as a component of the Bachelor's thesis, students will participate in a research project with one of the research groups at the IPMB or another participating institute.  

Most graduates go on to complete a Master’s degree programme at Heidelberg University or at another university in Germany or abroad. 

Within the Bachelor’s degree programme, particular emphasis is placed upon preparing graduates for potential careers in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. For this reason, students will participate during their studies in a minimum six-week internship at a biotechnology or pharmaceutical firm.
