Course Content

The degree programme in Medical Education offers those with responsibilities for planning, organising and ensuring the smooth running of medical degree programmes, the opportunity to familiarise themselves with current theories of education, and cutting-edge teaching methods. Graduates of the programme will go on to play a pivotal role in ensuring the introduction of new approaches to medical education into their faculties, in particular in relation to didactic methods.

The degree programme draws on international models and benefits from the involvement of qualified external colleagues. From the very beginning of the course, students participate in an ongoing process of evaluation. In 2017, the degree programme underwent a successful reaccreditation process with Heidelberg University.

The degree programme has the following aims:

  • The professionalisation of medical education
  • Improvements in the quality of teaching
  • The qualification of those in management positions, in particular in medical faculties
  • The promotion of exchange across Germany
  • The promotion of high-quality educational research

The degree programme in Medical Education (MME) is aimed in particular at those responsible for planning and organising degree programmes at medical faculties in Germany. It is hoped that graduates of the degree programme will introduce the cutting-edge concepts addressed in the course, to their relevant faculties (Train the trainer).

Course Structure

Students are required to attend eight modules in person. Each module requires that students attend lectures and courses on five days (Mon – Fri), which generally fall within an 18 months period. Subsequent to this, students spend six months completing a Master’s thesis.

Modules are completed at selected universities in German-speaking countries. Module 8 is completed at a different university each year. This university will be located in Germany, or abroad. An important part of the course is the independent planning, creation and evaluation of a training course or workshop at the student’s home faculty. At the end of this project, students complete a comprehensive, written report.

The Master’s thesis takes the form of an educational research project, to be developed by the course participants and presented as part of a module, course or lecture relating to educational research. The Master’s thesis is produced under the supervision of an expert in the field.
