Course Content

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Latin Studies focusses on the study of surviving ancient texts in the Latin language. Students in the degree programme will gain skills in effectively translating and authoring texts in Latin and will learn fundamental theoretical positions and methods of literature in general as well as the most important theories of linguistics. They will also gain an overview of the history of the Latin language and its literature.  On the basis of this well-founded knowledge of both the history of literature as well as fundamental theories and methods, students will learn to effectively describe and interpret Latin texts and to develop their own research inquiries. An essential element in this is the continual reflection on the relevance of engaging with Latin language texts and the Latin culture. This reflection enables students to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue with representatives from related disciplines and to make clear to those in other subject areas (including non-scientists) the relevance of Latin Studies.

During the course of studies, students will also gain the ability to perform independent work and to develop strategies for resolving research questions. In addition, they will hone their critical judgement skills and will learn to objectively formulate their own criticism as well as to constructively deal with external criticism of their own positions.

Course Structure

At the beginning of the degree programme, translation assignments into and out of Latin will allow students to review and solidify basic language and grammar skills. In addition, introductory courses will provide an overview of the objectives, methods, and history of classical philology (Introduction to Classical Philology), critical literary methods and theories (Introduction to Literary Studies), and linguistics fundamentals (Introduction to Linguistics). Over the course of studies, in addition to translation exercises involving increasingly complex texts, seminars and lectures will allow students to gain analytical and interpretive skills. Following completion of the introductory modules, students may also select a specialisation from the areas of either Latin literature or Latin linguistics. The Bachelor’s degree programme concludes with the Bachelor’s thesis.

The polyvalent Bachelor's degree opens up two qualification options: the academic training can serve as the basis for the Master of Education in the Lehramt Gymnasium profile if the career goal is to become a teacher. At the same time, the polyvalent Bachelor can be the basis for a Master of Arts or Master of Science. This study decision can be made during the Bachelor's degree programme.
