To make health services available to those who need them the most, many developing countries need to improve health care policies, to improve efficency at all levels of organisation, planning and management across the health care system, and to ensure sustainable financing. The MScIH programme at Heidelberg University has been designed with these factors in mind. The objective of the programme is to provide students with a solid foundation in international public health principles and to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement and run sustainable programmes for disease control, health promotion, and health services development across a wide range of populations and countries..

Research

The Heidelberg Institute of Global Health (HIGH) belongs to the group of research institutes operated by the Faculty of Medicine at Heidelberg University. The institute was founded in 1962 and has a staff of about 60.

Through its research, the HIPH aims to contribute to improving the health of some of the most disease-afflicted and poverty-stricken populations worldwide, especially in Africa and Asia. Through its teaching, the institute aims to train the next generation of global health researchers and practitioners.

The research projects at the institute focus on

  • identifying crucial disease risk factors and health care needs,
  • discovering new approaches to improving health among the general population and
  • establishing innovative models for health care provision

in Africa and Asia.
