Course Content

The German Studies degree programme provides students with an entry-level professional qualification and equips them with the necessary skills to independently resolve linguistic, literary, and cultural-history questions and problems. In the Bachelor’s degree programme for vocational teaching, German, as the general education secondary subject, constitutes 33% of the degree programme and may only be studied in conjunction with the degree programme in Gerontology, Health and Care (67%).

Course Structure

The degree programme is divided into:

  • an Introductory Phase (1st and 2nd semesters)
  • an Intermediary Phase (3rd and 4th semesters)
  • a Specialisation Phase (5th and 6th semesters)

The degree programme normally runs for 6 semesters and consists of four subject-specific modules, one didactic module and one examination module (final oral examination in the specialisation). An orientation proof must be provided no later than at the end of the second semester. This will take place during the study period and consists of the successful completion of two introductory courses: Introduction to Modern German Literature and Introduction to Medieval Studies (Middle High German). During the Introductory Phase, all subject units will be given equal emphasis. In the Intermediary and Specialisation phases, study of the three main subject units of the degree programme (German linguistics, German philology, post-Renaissance German literature) will be continued within the framework of the basic module. At this stage, students will undertake more detailed study of one of the three subject units (specialisation).

Latin language skills are a prerequisite for the general education secondary subject. Documentation of these must be submitted no later than the end of the fourth semester of study. In addition, documentation of knowledge of two additional modern foreign languages (level B1) must be submitted.
