Course Content

The German Studies degree programme provides students with an entry-level professional qualification and equips them with the necessary skills to independently resolve linguistic, literary, and cultural-history questions and problems. The Bachelor’s teaching degree programme option is normally a prerequisite for admittance to the Master’s degree programme in Education.

Course Structure

The degree programme is divided into

  • an Introductory Phase (1st and 2nd semesters)
  • an Intermediary Phase (3rd and 4th semesters)
  • a Specialisation Phase (5th and 6th semesters)

An orientation proof must be provided no later than at the end of the second semester. This will take place during the study period and consists of the successful completion of two introductory courses: Introduction to Modern German Literature and Introduction to Medieval Studies (Middle High German). During the Introductory Phase, all subject units will be given equal emphasis. In the Intermediate and Specialisation phases, studies in German Linguistics, Medieval German Philology, Modern German Literature will continue on the basis of the basic module. In addition, in the 1st and 2nd major, students will pursue advanced studies in one of the subject units (specialisation). In addition, students pursuing the degree as a major must enrol in interdisciplinary skills courses during the Introductory and Intermediate phases.

In the Bachelor’s degree programme as a 50% major, Latin language skills are required. Documentation of these must be submitted no later than the end of the fourth semester of study. In addition, documentation of knowledge of two additional modern foreign languages must be submitted.

The polyvalent Bachelor's degree opens up two qualification options: the academic training can serve as the basis for the Master of Education in the Lehramt Gymnasium profile if the career goal is to become a teacher. At the same time, the polyvalent Bachelor can be the basis for a Master of Arts or Master of Science. This study decision can be made during the Bachelor's degree programme.
