Faculty of Chemistry and Earth SciencesEarth Sciences – Bachelor 100%

The objective of Earth Sciences is to understand the creation and development of planet Earth from its beginning to its current complexity. Due to the interactions between the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere, the Earth’s surface – and with it, the human habitat – is constantly changing.

Course Content

The Bachelor’s degree programme conveys knowledge of the geoscientific disciplines Geology-Palaeontology, Mineralogy, and Environmental Geochemistry, qualifying graduates for entry-level professional positions.

Students initially are provided with an overview of the fundamentals of the Natural Sciences, the Earth system, rocks and minerals, and the development of life. In subsequent semesters, students will gain increased knowledge about geological history, geodynamics, igneous activity and metamorphosis, sediments, environmental geochemistry, and isotope methods. Traditional analytical methods, such as light microscopy, will be taught alongside advanced electron beam lithography, mass spectrometry, and environmental analysis. In later semesters, students may select a specialisation from the compulsory elective modules Geology, Mineralogy or Environmental Geochemistry, after which they will complete the Bachelor’s thesis.

Closely-supervised, practice-oriented laboratory and field courses, convey knowledge that is critical for preparing graduates for a profession. This knowledge is complemented by colloquia led by seasoned external lecturers as well as an internship, project work, and research.
