Course Content

Students who complete Chemistry as a supplementary subject are qualified to teach chemistry at all levels of Gymnasium education.
Course content primarily consists of content from the 50% Bachelor's degree programme in Chemistry and components of the Master of Education degree programme in Chemistry.

Graduates who have completed the programme in Chemistry as a supplementary subject will have gained expertise that includes the following:

  • They will possess specialised subject knowledge in chemistry that enables them to understand current recent research in the field.

  • They will be able to understand and evaluate information regarding chemistry in its various applications and contexts.

  • They will be able to identify key issues that allow them to structure the different areas of chemistry, to cross-link these areas, and to relate them to Chemistry education and its ongoing development.

  • They will be familiar with the essential working and data-gathering methods in chemistry and will be able to safely conduct experiments.  

  • They will have specialised subject knowledge in chemistry didactics that is based on the current state of research, especially basic knowledge of the results of chemistry-related teaching/learning research.

  • Their expert knowledge will enable them to create professionally designed instructional concepts and media and to evaluate the content of such.  

  • They will have specialised scientific and didactic knowledge in the area of chemistry, enabling them in their role as educators to design teaching, learning, and educational processes in Chemistry.

Course Structure

Chemistry as a supplementary subject includes introductory and advanced courses in Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry. In addition, students will learn basic principles of mathematics, physics, and biochemistry as well as safety guidelines and hazardous substances.

In addition to lectures, tutorials, and seminars, laboratory practice plays an important role. The subject of didactics is intertwined In two modules that include scientific content and practical exercises from the fields of inorganic chemistry and organic chemistry. In another module, students will learn possible uses of digital teaching-learning formats. In determining the subject-specific didactic content of the programme, the Chemistry Department collaborates closely with secondary school (Gymnasium) teachers, the State Seminar for Didactics and Teacher Training, and the Heidelberg University of Education.

At the conclusion of the degree programme, students will complete a Master's thesis in which, using scientific methods, they will independently address a question from a specific branch of chemistry.

Chemistry can be studied as a subject comprising 120 credits (standard period of study 4 semesters).
