Course Content

The Bachelor’s degree programme in Chemistry with a 100% weighting aims to equip students with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of Chemistry. Students gain basic knowledge in a variety of fields, acquire experimental skills, and develop the ability to think independently and behave responsibly. Graduates have a good overview of the nature of chemical bonds and are able to apply appropriate methods to solve research questions in the field of chemistry. The broad academic programme prepares students to undertake independent research.

In view of the speed at which methods, processes and professions in the field develop, the degree programme is intended to provide students with a solid grounding in chemistry and related disciplines. This ensures that following completion of the academic programme, they are able to stay abreast of new developments, enter new fields, and contribute to further development of their subject area in terms of research and technology. In particular, students are prepared to undertake a consecutive Master’s degree programme in Chemistry.

Course Structure

In addition to broad theoretical and practical skills in inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry, the Bachelor’s degree programme also provides students with knowledge of relevant concepts from the field of mathematics and physics. Additional lectures and seminars explore topics including safety and hazardous substances, methods in spectroscopy and biochemistry.

Students also select a number of compulsory elective modules and are therefore able to develop knowledge in a specific area of chemistry (e.g. biochemistry, biophysical chemistry, radiochemistry, theoretical chemistry), or if they wish, in another subject area (e.g. astronomy, biosciences, earth sciences, computer science, pharmaceuticals, psychology, economics).

At the end of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Chemistry, students sit a final oral examination and complete a Bachelor’s thesis in an area of research relevant to Chemistry.

Students develop general competences (e.g. the ability to work in a team, time management, academic writing skills, presentation skills) during the degree programme, and are also able to select elective modules in a specific area of chemistry, or in a subject area other than the sciences.
