Course Content

This international, integrated Master’s degree draws on the particular strengths of the École du Louvre and Heidelberg University. Students spend the first year of the Master’s degree programme studying museology at the École du Louvre. The course relates strongly to practice and provides students with comprehensive knowledge of cultural heritage, the history of museums and collections, art administration and art law, restauration and conservation, museum education and museology. Students also have frequent opportunities to visit the Louvre and other Parisian museums to analyse and discuss the presentation of artworks.

The second year is spent in Heidelberg and is intended to equip students with the methodical skills required for academic study, and improve their analytical and critical skills. In addition, students gain knowledge of particular periods, genres and issues in the field of art history. Students are also able to build their individual, interdisciplinary profile. Studying at the two institutions, located in two different countries and offering different areas specialism, work, study and learning methods, gives students the opportunity to gain knowledge of the required terminology in both French and German, and increases their awareness of cultural and subject-specific particularities in each of the countries.

Course Structure

Students are expected to complete the course of study within four semesters. Two semesters are spent at the École du Louvre and two are spent at Heidelberg University. Students begin the Master’s degree programme in the winter semester at the École du Louvre in Paris, where they spend their entire first year. Students must complete a written paper of approximately 50 pages on a topic chosen from the field of art history or museology. The examinations taken in the first and second semesters are subject to the examination regulations of the École du Louvre. The third  semester is spent at Heidelberg University. The Master’s thesis of approximately 60 pages is completed in the fourth semester at Heidelberg University.  The Master’s degree programme is taught in French in Paris and in German and Heidelberg. Between the two academic years, students have the opportunity to complete an optional internship and participate in an excursion under joint supervision of the French and German institutes.
