Support - EUOverview: ERC Grants

The European Research Council (ERC) supports outstanding scientists in order to advance frontier research and visionary projects and to open up new interdisciplinary fields of knowledge.

Among its lines of funding are the Starting, the Consolidator, the Advanced and the Synergy Grant. Researchers from Heidelberg University have been awarded 108 ERC Grants (incl. Bridge Professorships) in total since 2008.

  • Starting Grants (up to 1,5 Mio. EUR for 5 years): ERC Starting Grants support promising early-career researchers.
  • Consolidator Grants (up to 1,5 Mio. EUR for 5 years): ERC Consolidator Grants are aimed at excellent researchers with 7 to 12 years experience after their PhD.
  • Advanced Grants (up to 2,5 Mio. EUR for 5 years): The ERC Advanced Grant is awarded to outstanding, established researchers.
  • Synergy Grants (up to 10 Mio. EUR for 6 years): ERC Synergy Grants are used to fund ambitious research projects that are too complex for individual researchers and their groups to tackle individually.

Note: For the sake of simplicity, grants which are currently in contract negotiations are counted as running in the table below.
