EU Research & Innovation Programme 2021 – 2027Horizon Europe
On January 1, 2021, the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation “Horizon Europe” was launched. Horizon Europe is the follow-up programme to Horizon 2020 and will run until December 31, 2027.
Horizon Europe is organized into three pillars:
Pillar I: Excellent Science
Pillar I “Excellent Science” includes programmes for open-topic (individual) funding:
- European Research Council (ERC)
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie-Actions (MSCA)
- Research infrastructures
Pillar II: Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness
Pillar II “Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness” brings the former 13 topics of Horizon 2020 together into six clusters, which are intended to help address the major societal challenges:
- Health
- Culture, creativity and inclusive society
- Civil security for society
- Digital, industry and space
- Climate, energy and mobility
- Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture and environment
Pillar III: Innovative Europe
Innovation-related funding measures are located in Pillar III “Innovative Europe”:
- European Innovation Council (EIC)
- European Innovation Ecosystems
- European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT).
The Heidelberg Research Service of the Research Division (D6) supports researchers at Heidelberg University in the application and project management of research projects within the framework of Horizon Europe:

ERC Grants
The European Research Council (ERC) supports top researchers in the advancement of basic research and visionary projects and the development of new interdisciplinary fields of knowledge. Researchers from Heidelberg University have been awarded 69 ERC Grants in total since 2008.
MSCA Doctoral Networks
MSCA Doctoral Networks implement doctoral programmes through partnerships of organisations from different sectors across Europe and beyond. The aim of Doctoral Networks is to train creative, entrepreneurial, innovative and resilient doctoral candidates, able to face current and future challenges.
