Field of Focus IV Funded Projects
Societies are currently facing profound processes of transformation. These include, among others, digital change, demographic shifts, global health and environmental crises, political and geopolitical developments, and social polarization, as well as issues regarding social participation, sustainable development, and the regulation of new technologies. Understanding and shaping these challenges requires insights into human behavior, social dynamics, political and legal institutions, and the interactions between them.
The Field of Focus 4 pools the expertise of the social sciences and law at Heidelberg University to investigate such questions from a human-centered perspective. Its central aim is to gain fundamental insights into individuals, groups, organizations, institutions, and societies, thereby contributing to the development of scientifically grounded solutions for current and future societal challenges. In doing so, Field of Focus 4 fosters exchange within the social and legal sciences as well as collaboration with the life sciences, natural sciences, and humanities. Many of the most pressing questions of our time can only be answered by combining different perspectives, methods, and research approaches. Field of Focus 4 therefore serves as a platform for interdisciplinary research, enabling innovative ideas, joint projects, and sustainable scientific collaborations. In recent years, Field of Focus 4 has successfully supported small and medium-sized interdisciplinary research initiatives. Building on this experience, future support will focus on developing larger, internationally visible research consortia that address key scientific and societal challenges and further enhance the profile of the social sciences and law at Heidelberg University.
