Excellence StrategyCommission for Research & Strategy

The Commission for Research and Strategy was established as a central body within the framework of Excellence Initiative II at Heidelberg University. Its members include

  • the Rector, the Vice-Rector for Research, and the Vice-Rector for Innovation and Transfer,
  • two representatives from each Research Council (RC), including representatives from the Flagship Initiatives,
  • the two directors of the Marsilius Kolleg,
  • a professorial representative from the Heidelberg Center for the Environment (HCE),
  • a professorial representative from the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR),
  • two junior researchers,
  • two selected members of the senate.

The Vice-Rector for Quality Development, the Equal Opportunities Commissioner, the Director of the Research Division, and the Director of Communications and Marketing are permanent guest participants in the meetings of the Commission for Research and Strategy and each has an advisory role. The Commission meets four times per year and as needed.

The Commission for Research and Strategy supports and advises the Rectorate with respect to its responsibilities, in particular:

  • the creation of a platform for exchange between the Fields of Focus, the Flagship Initiatives, and the interdisciplinary incubators, and preparation for strategic decisions by the Rectorate in the area of research,
  • recommendations to the Rectorate concerning the allocation of central funds to promote core facilities and IT infrastructures from the Universities of Excellence funding line,
  • issuance of position statements to the responsible bodies on the establishment, change, and dissolution of research facilities,
  • progress monitoring with respect to the advancement of young researchers, recruiting, research-oriented teaching, equal opportunities and diversity, cooperation with non-university partners, and expansion of internationality and transfer.

The extraordinary significance of the Commission results from its responsibility to recognise and promote new opportunities for interdisciplinary cooperation between the Fields of Focus. The annual meeting of the Rectorate, the Academic Advisory Council (AAC), and the Commission for Research and Strategy ensures an unbiased assessment of the issues and outcomes of the Excellence Strategy and the development of the university as a whole.
