Active & Passive

DEAR READERS OF RUPERTO CAROLA,

This 26th edition of RUPERTO CAROLA entitled ACTIVE & PASSIVE invites you to rethink the apparent contradiction between these terms. It shows that activity is not always effective – and that passivity is not necessarily synonymous with inactivity. In neuroimmunology, for example, the targeted “activation” of the body’s own defences can open up new ways of fighting brain tumors. Climate research is about translating knowledge into action – and determining which societal processes encourage or hinder necessary activities. And in psychology or sports science, seemingly passive reactions – such as the goalkeeper staying in the middle of the goal during a penalty – are recognized as sensible, sometimes even superior, strategies.

The articles in this issue show how multifaceted the interplay between activity and passivity really is. It unfolds across molecular switches and political movements, ageing processes and participatory educational approaches, civic engagement and individual lifestyles – and it shows us the limits of what we can control. Because not everything is in our hands. Sometimes it is wiser not to act, but to listen, observe and accept.

I invite you to explore this change of perspective – and wish you an insightful read.
