Dr Cornelia Schu is managing director of the Expert Council for Integration and Migration (SVR) gGmbH.

Dr Schu was born in Mainz in 1969. She studied German language and medieval German literature, modern German literature and Iberian Romance languages at the University of Bonn. In 2000 she took her doctorate there in 2000 in German studies, with a thesis on Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival, then becoming a researcher in medieval German studies.

From 2003 to 2010 Dr Schu held various positions in the office of the German Council of Science and Humanities, including as personal assistant to the secretary general and the chairman. She was also a research consultant focusing on European research policy and international affairs, and a research consultant in the higher education and governance department. From 2011 to 2014 she was in charge of Stiftung Mercator’s thematic cluster on integration. In June 2014 she took on the management of the Expert Council, an independent scholarly body that provides policy advice in the field of integration and migration.

Further, Dr Schu is a member of a number of advisory boards and committees. For example, she is currently a member and deputy chair of the Goethe Institute’s advisory board “Mobility and Migration” and a member of the academic advisory council of the DFG-funded research project “German Emigration and Remigration Panel Study” of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and the Federal Institute for Population Research (BIB). 

In 2014 she was a member of the group of advisors to the Lower-Saxony state premier Stephan Weil on “Education as a National Responsibility” and from 2012 to 2014 served on the Arnsberg district authority’s Integration Council.

She has been a member of the Heidelberg University Council since 2015.
