Teaching visitsLecturer Mobility

The ERASMUS+ program of the European Union enables the funding of guest lectureships at European ERASMUS+ partner universities and offers the opportunity to gain international teaching experience, get to know other teaching cultures and network internationally. ERASMUS+ Lecturer Mobility, also known as Staff Mobility for Teaching Assignment (STA), is also intended to promote the exchange of different teaching content and methods and the development of joint modules or study programs at the partner universities. The funding line also aims to contribute to strengthening the European dimension and "internationalization at home" at the host university.

Who can apply for funding?

ERASMUS+ guest lectureships can be applied for by lecturers at Heidelberg University who have a contractual employment relationship with the university. After consultation and approval by the institute or the ERASMUS subject coordinators, lecturers without a salary, lecturers with work contracts, emeritus professors and retired lecturers, company personnel can also be funded. Persons with special support needs (traveling with a child / traveling with physical disabilities) can apply for additional grants.

Due to limited ERASMUS+ funds and in accordance with the DAAD's award guidelines, priority should be given to employees who have not yet received ERASMUS+ mobility funding. If sufficient funds are available, repeated applications for funding can also be considered.

What are the funding criteria?

Funding for teaching stays at an ERASMUS+ partner university is possible from two days and with a teaching workload of at least eight hours per stay or per week or part thereof. Due to limited funds, only teaching stays of up to 5 working days can generally be funded. Longer funding periods are possible in exceptional cases by prior arrangement and with sufficient ERASMUS+ funds.

The courses should be integrated into the department of the host institution and coordinated with the host university and the student's own department (Teaching Agreement). For an ERASMUS guest lectureship, a contractual agreement between both universities on the intended teaching stay is also required. The ERASMUS subject coordinators can provide information on existing ERASMUS contracts for lecturer mobility. New contracts should be agreed in good time with the subject coordinators and the Department of International Relations.

How can I apply for ERASMUS+ funding?

Applications for ERASMUS+ lecturer mobility funding should be submitted in writing to the International Relations Office at least 4 weeks before the start of the mobility and should include the following information:

  • Name of the Heidelberg university lecturer, subject area, address
  • Name of the host university, country
  • Name of the teaching project
  • Planned period/duration of the stay

After receipt of the informal application by e-mail, further information and the necessary documents will be sent to you. An ERASMUS+ mobility agreement (Teaching Agreement) must be agreed between the employee, the host university and the home university before the start of the trip and submitted with the business trip application. Based on these documents, the grant agreement is concluded between the traveler and Heidelberg University, represented by the Department of International Relations.

Early application is recommended, as funding for ERASMUS+ lecturer mobility can only be granted if sufficient ERASMUS+ funds are available. The International Relations Office will be happy to answer any further questions you may have.

How much funding is available?

ERASMUS+ funding is available for stays in all countries participating in the ERASMUS+ program. It is calculated on the basis of a country-specific daily allowance and a travel allowance, which is allocated according to the distance between the home university and the host institution using the EU distance calculator. An increased travel allowance (Green Travel) can be paid for travel by low-emission means of transport such as bus, train or carpooling. The exact flat rates are listed in the table below.

Due to limited ERASMUS+ funds, only a maximum period of 5 days can usually be subsidized, even if the mobility is to take place over a longer period.
