Physicist Matthias Weidemüller assumes newly created office

In its 5 November 2019 session, the Senate of Heidelberg University elected a Vice-Rector for Innovation and Transfer. Physicist Prof. Dr Matthias Weidemüller assumes the newly created office. His responsibilities include promoting knowledge transfer as well as initiating cooperations and partnerships with businesses, and political and social institutions. His three-year term begins immediately.

Matthias Weidemüller studied physics and philosophy at the Universities of Bonn and Munich; he earned his doctorate in Munich in 1995. Research fellowships took him to the École Normale Supérieure in Paris (France), the University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), and the FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics located there. He joined the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg in 1997 and habilitated at Heidelberg University in 2000. Prof. Weidemüller taught experimental physics at the University of Freiburg from 2003 to 2008, and then accepted an appointment to the Institute for Physics at Ruperto Carola. He is the founding director of the Heidelberg Center for Quantum Dynamics. He has taught as a visiting professor in Austria, Brazil, and China.

The Rectorate consists of two full-time members, Rector Prof. Dr Bernhard Eitel and Kanzler Dr Holger Schroeter, and as of now, five part-time Vice-Rectors. In addition to Prof. Weidemüller, they are Prof. Dr Karin Schumacher (Vice-Rector for Quality Development) and Prof. Dr Anja-Désirée Senz (Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Teaching). Prof. Dr Jörg Pross is Vice-Rector for Research and Prof. Dr Marc-Philippe Weller Vice-Rector for International Affairs.
