International evaluationUniversität Heidelberg with Nine “Highly Cited Researchers"

18 November 2021

International evaluation names researchers whose publications have been most cited worldwide

Nine researchers from Heidelberg University feature on the list of “Highly Cited Researchers” that has just appeared. This international evaluation names researchers whose publications have been cited most frequently worldwide in their respective field – a total of 22 disciplines from the natural, life and social sciences are represented – or who have an outstanding track-record of publications across several disciplines. Five of the nine most-cited scientists from Ruperto Carola are in this cross-field category.

One of the most cited scientists in his field worldwide is Prof. Dr Ralf Bartenschlager (microbiology), who is on the list of “Highly Cited Researchers” for the ninth time in a row. Prof. Dr Andreas Meyer-Lindenberg (cross-field) is cited for the eighth successive time, Prof. Dr Andreas von Deimling (neuroscience and behaviour) for the seventh time and Prof. Dr Werner Hacke (cross-field) for the fifth time in a row. Listed as highly cited researchers again, as in 2020, are Prof. Dr Uwe Haberkorn (clinical medicine) along with Prof. Dr Stefan Pfister and Prof. Dr Wolfgang Wick (both cross-field). New on the list this year are Prof. Dr Frederik Giesel (clinical medicine) and Prof. Dr Jessica Hassel (cross-field).

The citation count reflects how often colleagues cite a publication in their research papers, and is therefore an important indicator of a publication’s scientific influence. The latest list of highly cited researchers, issued by Clarivate Analytics, assessed publications between 2010 and 2020. Highly cited publications are those in the top 1% by citations in their respective field and year of publication. The list was first issued in 2001; it was revised for the first time in 2014 and since then has appeared annually. It currently names approximately 6,300 researchers, including about 2,800 for cross-field performance.
