Ranking Universität Heidelberg: Top Placements in QS Rankings by Subject

Classics and Ancient History, Theology, and Biological Sciences once again achieve top positions in Germany

Heidelberg University has achieved top placements in different subject areas of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. In the Arts & Humanities, Classics and Ancient History as well as Theology are both ranked first in Germany, as in the previous year; they are in eighth and eleventh position internationally – Ruperto Carola’s two best placements in the current QS Rankings by Subject. Also ranked at the top in the national comparison are the Biological Sciences in Heidelberg, having climbed four places to take 28th position globally. They belong to the Life Sciences & Medicine subject area, which is ranked second in Germany and remains in 33rd place internationally.

Among the individual Life Sciences and Medicine disciplines that have achieved top placings is Medicine itself, which is in second place Germany-wide and ranked 34th internationally. With Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Heidelberg University takes third place nationally and is among the top 100 universities in the international comparison. Psychology at Ruperto Carola is fourth in Germany and likewise among the top 100 in the global comparison. Ranked third in Germany are, as in the previous year, Physics and Astronomy, which are evaluated together in the Natural Sciences subject area. They have moved up one place internationally and are now in position 43.

In the Arts & Humanities subject area – ranked 68th worldwide and fourth in Germany – Heidelberg University has achieved strong results with two additional individual subjects: Archaeology is in 29th position internationally and in fourth place at the national level – as is Philosophy in Heidelberg. It has moved up 18 places from last year and now ranks 31st internationally. Having climbed 20 places, Law – grouped in the subject area Social Sciences & Management – has moved into the top 50 in the global comparison at 49th place, which means third in Germany (up from fourth last year). 

The Rankings by Subject – published on 25 March 2026 – are primarily based on data from academic and employer surveys carried out for the QS World University Rankings and here evaluated in terms of specific subjects. Citation analyses are likewise considered. In some subjects account is taken of the indicator “International Research Networks”. The indicators are weighted differently depending on the subject areas and the individual disciplines.
