5 July 2019

Current ranking list again places Heidelberg University first in Germany

In the current Times Higher Education Europe Teaching Rankings, Heidelberg University is Germany's top-ranking institution – as it was last year. Other German universities on the list include the University of Göttingen, Ludwig Maximilian University Munich, the University of Mannheim, and the Technical University of Munich, which all placed in the 51 to 75 group in Europe. At 35th, Heidelberg University ranks among the top 50 universities in Europe, with the University of Oxford (Great Britain) at number one.

The THE Europe Teaching Rankings from Times Higher Education (THE) is in its second publication since 2018 and focuses on the area of teaching and learning in universities. An institution's overall score is based on 14 weighted individual performance indicators, grouped into the four key areas of university engagement with its students, resources, outcomes, as well as teaching and learning environment. Among the indicators are staff-to-student ratio, graduation rate, academic reputation, proportion of international students, student mobility, as well as gender balance of students and academic staff.

The ranking list is based on university data as well as the results of the annual THE Academic Reputation Survey and the separate THE European Student Survey carried out specifically for this ranking.
