Commemorating the victims of 24 JanuaryStudents gather for a common procession of commemoration and mourning

22 February 2022

In order to express their grief and sympathy, but also their sense of belonging together and community, students from Heidelberg University gathered for a procession of commemoration and mourning, four weeks after the sad events on the Im Neuenheimer Feld campus. Initiated by the student committee of the Faculty of Biosciences, and supported by the constituted student body, the line with several hundreds of students processed from the New University through the Hauptstraße, along the edge of Bergheim, over the Theodor Heuss Bridge to Neuenheim and, finally, the campus grounds there. The procession ended in front of the Central Mensa with an act of remembrance and commemoration of the victims, in particular the 23-year-old student who was killed on 24 January 2022.

Prof. Dr Bernhard Eitel, Rector of Ruperto Carola, emphasised: “The students are ending the winter semester by remembering the terrible deed and the victims of the attack on our university. Processing across the three Heidelberg University campus grounds is a magnificent symbol of belonging together across all subject borders in our academic community. That is why – in all our grief and deep sympathy – I welcome this initiative by the students, particularly the biology student committee, as a sign of solidarity and hope for which we are grateful.”
