Fellowship Romani Rose Fellowship Advertised

A fellowship in the field of antigypsyism studies is now being advertised in a new round of grants at Heidelberg University’s Research Centre on Antigypsyism. Endowed with a sum of 20,000 euros, the Romani Rose Fellowship is available to doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers from European Union member states. It is funded by the Manfred Lautenschläger Foundation and named after Romani Rose, Chair of the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma. The closing date for applications is 30 September 2025. Funding will start at the beginning of next year.

The Romani Rose Fellowship can be awarded in two forms. Over a period of twelve months, doctoral candidates receive a monthly grant of 1,666 euros in order to prepare for, write up or conclude their doctoral work. Postdoctoral researchers wishing to sharpen their academic profile after their doctorate apply for an eight-month fellowship endowed with 2,500 euros per month. Support goes to projects and research initiatives related to antigypsyism studies or a connected field such as research on racism. The fellows are selected by a commission at the research center. The grant comes with a stay at the Research Centre on Antigypsyism of Ruperto Carola. The fellowship pays tribute to Romani Rose’s decades of commitment to human and civil rights.

The Research Centre on Antigypsyism is based at Heidelberg University’s Department of History. It explores the causes, forms and consequences of antigypsyism in European societies, from the Middle Ages to the present, also and especially including mechanisms of prejudice formation and discriminatory practices.
