DFG funding for Mannheim RTG

The Research Training Group “Hallmarks of Skin Cancer: Tumor Microenvironment and Melanoma Immunology” (RTG 2099) has succeeded in gaining funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) in the latest approval round. The RTG in Dermatology, which is coordinated by the Medical Faculty Mannheim of Heidelberg University, will receive DFG funding in the amount of approximately 5.1 million euros. This institution of structured doctoral training thus enters its second, four-and-a-half year funding period.

RTG 2099 is focussed on improving our understanding of the biology of skin cancer, which is difficult to cure once it has spread. In the second funding period, the research fellows will primarily address the interactions of the melanoma with the tumour's micromilieu and the tumour immune system, which were identified as therapeutically relevant “hallmarks of skin cancer”. The spokesperson for the RTG is Prof. Dr Sergij Goerdt, Director of the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology at Mannheim University Hospital, and Dean of the Medical Faculty Mannheim. Besides the dermatologists from Mannheim, researchers from the German Cancer Research Center and the Medical Faculty Heidelberg are also involved in the research programme. International cooperation partners of GRK 2099 include the St. John’s Institute of Dermatology of King’s College London as well as other institutions in Great Britain. Also joining in the work of the RTG as cooperation partner for the second funding period is the Institute Gustave Roussy near Paris (France).
