International comparison of universities – Subject Ranking: Heidelberg best four times in Germany

In the Best Global Universities Ranking, a comparison of the best higher education institutions worldwide, Ruperto Carola has been placed second among the universities in Germany. In the international field, Heidelberg University ranks 56th. With Ludwig Maximilian University Munich (43), the Technical University of Munich (77) and Berlin’s Humboldt University (91), four German universities are represented in the “Top 100” list. Europe-wide, Heidelberg is ranked 15th. Besides the universities, selected subjects are also rated, with Heidelberg topping the list of German universities four times.

In the Subject Ranking, Ruperto Carola earned an international “Top 100” rating in twelve academic disciplines. In nine of them, it was among the 50 best representatives of the respective field worldwide. The best international rating was achieved by Oncology, which was placed 14th. That is the leading position at the national level. Others to head the list of German universities are surgery (25) and clinical medicine (33), as well as neuroscience and behaviour (24). Another five disciplines at Heidelberg University were ranked second Germany-wide. They are biology / biochemistry (41), molecular biology / genetics (39), physics (34), social sciences / public health (104) and space science (36), comprising astronomy, astrophysics and related subjects. Heidelberg is among Germany’s top three universities in cardiology / cardiovascular systems (50) and psychiatry / psychology (71).

Evaluation criteria in this ranking include the research reputation and the publication performance of the respective university. A total of 13 variously weighted indicators are used to generate the ranking. They include the global and regional reputation of the research and a number of factors specific to citations and publications. The Best Global Universities Ranking covers 1,500 higher education institutions. They were evaluated on the Clarivate Analytics database. The ranking list is published by the American media company U.S. News.
