hei_INNOVATION Ideas Competition 2026 for Research Results with Potential for Application

Members of the university are invited to submit innovative ideas for meeting economic, ecological and social challenges by 31 March
Innovative ideas and research results with potential for exploitation or change are wanted for the 2026 Ideas Competition at Heidelberg University. The focus is on innovations that can contribute to resolving economic, ecological and social challenges of our time. The call for interest in the contest comes from hei_INNOVATION, the university’s transfer agency. It is addressed to all members of Ruperto Carola. Prize money and non-cash prizes will be awarded for the three best ideas in two categories. Applications close on 31 March 2026.
With the Ideas Competition 2026 hei_INNOVATION wants to provide a platform to present and take forward impactful innovations. Eligible to participate are students, researchers, and staff of Heidelberg University, including the Medical Faculties in Heidelberg and Mannheim. The contest is also open to alumni who graduated no more than three years ago. In the first category “Health and Future Technologies”, transformative ideas from the fields of medicine and technology will receive awards. The second category “Impact Innovation” is particularly meant for entries from the humanities and social sciences linking social justice, ecological sustainability, and technological progress.
Each contribution to the competition will be assessed by hei_INNOVATION. After the preselection, the finalists will receive professional pitch training and present their ideas at the final of the Ideas Competition on 20 May 2026. A panel of experts from business, culture, and research will assess the entries and select the three best ideas per category. The winners of the first prize will be awarded prize money of 2,000 euros and the second and third prize winners will receive non-cash prizes. The applications – from both individuals and teams – can be submitted via an online portal.
