Research Station Geometry and DynamicsHumboldt Fellows in Mathematics

20 July 2021

The Research Station Geometry and Dynamics of Ruperto Carola welcomes four new Humboldt Research Fellows

Four international junior researchers are working at the Mathematical Institute of Heidelberg University. With the support of an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship, Dr Giulio Belletti, Dr Dani Tove Kaufman, Dr Jungsoo Kang, and Dr Georgios Kydonakis will run their projects at the Research Station Geometry and Dynamics in the coming months.

The research project of Dr Giulio Belletti, who earned his doctorate at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa (Italy), is based at the interface of mathematics and physics. He is particularly interested in the connections between the geometry of negatively curved spaces and special quantum field theories. His host for the six-month research stay at Ruperto Carola is Prof. Dr Beatrice Pozzetti.

Dr Dani Tove Kaufman earned her doctorate at the University of Maryland Park (USA). She is the first Humboldt Fellow to come to Heidelberg University under the auspices of the Henriette Herz Scouting Programme of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Her host for seven months is Prof. Dr Anna Wienhard, Director of the Research Station Geometry and Dynamics. Dr Kaufman's research is focused on combinatorial structures, so-called cluster algebras, which play a role in both mathematics and theoretical physics.

Dr Jungsoo Kang, currently an Associate Professor at Seoul National University (South Korea), will begin a twelve-month research stay at Heidelberg University in September. He is working on issues related to the geometry and contact dynamics of many-body systems. These topics stem from celestial mechanics, a branch of astronomy, but are also important in modern physics. His host at the Research Station Geometry and Dynamics is Prof. Dr Peter Albers.

Dr Georgios Kydonakis is an expert in the field of Higgs bundles and Hodge theory, which links various branches of mathematics and is particularly relevant for research at the interface of mathematics and theoretical physics. Dr Kydonakis had been working as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Strasbourg (France) as well as the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn. He will spend two years in Heidelberg. Prof. Wienhard will be his host when his research stay begins in September.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Research Fellowship supports outstanding postdoctoral and experienced researchers of all nations and disciplines to conduct a collaborative research project in Germany. Humboldt Research Fellowships are awarded for a period of up to 24 months. The Henriette Herz Scouting Programme offers scouts like Anna Wienhard the opportunity to put forward the names of up to three international junior researchers for a Humboldt Research Fellowship.
