Dr Giovanni Covi conducts research in the working group of Prof. Dr Angkana Rüland

Mathematician Dr Giovanni Covi is conducting research at the Institute for Applied Mathematics of Heidelberg University with a two-year Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship for postdocs. The Italian researcher will mathematically analyse so-called inverse problems. Dr Covi's host is Prof. Dr Angkana Rüland.

Inverse problems are investigated by determining from a set of observations the causal factors that produced them. Through indirect measurements, for example, conclusions can be drawn about unknown parameters or material properties reconstructed indirectly. Solving inverse problems is not only important in various disciplines of the natural sciences but in medicine as well, where they support non-invasive examinations. Together with Angkana Rüland, Professor for Applied Mathematics, Giovanni Covi will deepen his research in this field.

Giovanni Covi studied mathematics at the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (Italy) from 2009 to 2016. He spent the next four years at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland, where he earned his doctorate in 2020 with a dissertation in the field of inverse problems. Dr Covi was already working at Heidelberg University prior to receiving his Humboldt Research Fellowship.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation's Research Fellowship supports outstanding postdoctoral and experienced researchers of all nations and disciplines to conduct a collaborative research project in Germany. Humboldt Research Fellowships are awarded for a period of up to 24 months.
