David Komline joins Jan Stievermann’s research group for a project on the Reformed Tradition in the United States

With a one-year Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship, church historian Prof. Dr David Komline is a visiting scholar at the Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) of Heidelberg University. The US-American scholar is Associate Professor of Church History at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan (USA). At the HCA he will carry out a research project on the Reformed Church in the United States. Prof. Komline’s host is Prof. Dr Jan Stievermann, whose special field at the HCA and the Faculty of Theology of Ruperto Carola is the history of Christianity in the USA.

David Komline grew up in the Reformed Church in America (RCA). He completed a Bachelor of Arts at Wheaton College, a Christian liberal arts college in Illinois, and a Master of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary. In 2015 he obtained his Ph.D., with a thesis on a historical topic, from the University of Notre Dame. Before being granted the Humboldt Research Fellowship he had already taught a course at Heidelberg University as a visiting scholar. He also taught at Yantai University in China.

Prof. Komline’s research interests include the history of the Reformed Church in the United States, American evangelicalism and the religious roots of the American educational system. In his research project funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation he will be working with Jan Stievermann on the Reformed Tradition in the USA.

With its research fellowships, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation supports outstanding post-doctoral researchers and experienced scholars of all nations and disciplines in carrying out a collaborative research project in Germany. Humboldt Research Fellowships are granted for a period of up to 24 months.
