25 November 2022

Joint press release by the City of Mannheim, Heidelberg University Hospital, Mannheim University Hospital and Heidelberg University

“In the Heidelberg-Mannheim region, Baden-Württemberg already has an international flagship in life sciences and medicine. Not to use this potential to become a hotspot in research, patient care and the health economy in Europe and beyond would mean missing a unique opportunity.” Prof. Dr Bernhard Eitel, Rector of Heidelberg University, emphasised this in a joint press release in which the City of Mannheim, Heidelberg University Hospital, Mannheim University Hospital and Heidelberg University outlined their position on the merging of the two university hospitals and called on the Baden-Württemberg state government to implement it quickly.

In the joint press release on the link-up of the two university hospitals in Heidelberg and Mannheim, the institutions involved underline that – after a two-and-a-half-year review process – the results are clear. “As international science experts have done before, prestigious consultants have now extensively investigated the cost efficiency and usefulness in terms of medical strategy of such a link-up, and have strongly recommended a merger as offering huge opportunities for the state and the region. And it has to take place quickly,” the joint statement says. “We are confident that the facts will now lead to decisions setting the tracks for the merging of the two university hospitals,” the Rector added.

“The state is facing a major decision that has been intensively examined and clearly answered,” according to the press release. “The stakeholders involved now request the state government and state parliament to mandate them with implementing the merger.”
