Partnership spanning nearly three decades – Ruperto Carola maintains overseas office in Kyoto
The overseas office of Kyoto University (Japan) at Ruperto Carola is celebrating its fifth anniversary. A ceremony will be held on 11 September 2019 to mark the occasion. In attendance will be Heidelberg University Rector Prof. Dr Bernhard Eitel and Kyoto University President Prof. Dr Juichi Yamagiwa. Kyoto and Heidelberg are long-standing cooperation partners. The Kyoto University European Center in Heidelberg is one of three overseas offices whose task is to foster and broaden contacts in the field of research and education all over Europe. The university also maintains offices in Bangkok (Thailand) and Washington D.C. (USA).
The Kyoto University European Center in Heidelberg, located in the premises of the Old University, was officially inaugurated in May 2014. Ruperto Carola opened its own liaison office on the campus of Kyoto University in April 2015. The partnership between both universities goes back almost 30 years. In 2010, it was also the basis for the foundation of the German-Japanese university consortium HeKKSaGOn, which includes Heidelberg University, the University of Göttingen, and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology along with Kyoto University, Osaka University, and Tohoku University in Sendai. The Heidelberg University Office in Kyoto and the Kyoto University European Center in Heidelberg are both liaison offices for HeKKSaGOn alliance partners.
The central mission of the Kyoto University European Center is to foster research and educational activities of the Japanese university in Europe, to strengthen the mobility of researchers and students, and to promote the expansion of international networks. For its part, the Heidelberg liaison office supports contacts and cooperation of Ruperto Carola in East Asia. The partner universities agree that both institutions are essential promoters of internationalisation and intensified research exchange across borders.

The celebration in honour of the fifth anniversary of the Kyoto University European Center at Heidelberg University will take place on Wednesday, 11 September 2019, in the Great Hall of the Old University. The festivities, which are closed to the public, will begin at 7:00pm.
