SOFT & HARDAnniversary Edition of the Research Magazine RUPERTO CAROLA

Press Release No. 78/2022
26 July 2022

Articles by 18 Heidelberg academics on the thematic focus SOFT & HARD

The first edition of the newly conceptualised research magazine RUPERTO CAROLA appeared ten years ago, with the ambition of showcasing top-level research at Heidelberg University, its researchers and the special strengths of the comprehensive university to a wider readership at home and abroad. Since then, it has dedicated two editions a year to relevant focal themes crossing subject and disciplinary borders – summed up in pairs of terms such as OLD & YOUNG, the starter in 2012, or SOFT & HARD in the anniversary edition number 20 that has just appeared in July 2022. The articles here cover topics ranging from materials research and 3D printing to the acceptance of compromises in politics, from questions of personality development in adulthood to the interdependencies between hardware and software.

“With the format of a themed magazine, Heidelberg University wants to share its special potential and its aspiration, as a comprehensive university, to make a substantial contribution to understanding the complex challenges and major issues of our time,” declared Prof. Dr Bernhard Eitel, Rector of Ruperto Carola, when the first edition appeared. “I am proud to say that the Heidelberg University’s research journal has set new standards in science communication,” says the Rector about the anniversary edition. “Having won prizes for its combination of socially relevant research topics and an outstanding layout, the journal is a joy to browse through, offering insights into the wide range of research across subjects and disciplines that our comprehensive university has to offer.” The SOFT & HARD edition has compiled the articles of 18 researchers who present their current studies in different fields. Represented here are earth sciences, psychology, art history and literary studies, political science, law and economics, as well as various natural and life science disciplines.

The research magazine RUPERTO CAROLA appears twice yearly, mainly in German with English abstracts, and addresses all members of the university, its partners in academia, politics, business and society, and, in particular, alumni, friends and an interested public in Germany and abroad. The magazine is available from the Communications and Marketing department of Heidelberg University (Alte Universität, Grabengasse 1, phone +49 6221 / 54-2311). All issues are also accessible online via the open access publisher Heidelberg University Publishing (heiUP).
