Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Bernhard Eitel, a geographer, is the Rector of Heidelberg University. He represents the university both internally and externally and exercises the university’s domiciliary rights.
The Rector is responsible for the university’s development and strategic orientation, as well as fundraising. Other duties include appointments to professorships as well as the governance of the Excellence Initiative.
Equal opportunity issues are handled in the Rectorate under the aegis of the Rector. Further, the Rector is the head of the University Senate and all of its committees and he bears overall responsibility for the medical faculties.
The Rector serves a six-year term.
Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Bernhard Eitel has been Rector of Heidelberg University since 1 October 2007. He was re-elected by the senate for another six years in December 2012. On 12 March, 2019, the members of the University Council and the Senate voted by a large majority for his third term as Rector, which began on 1 October 2019.
