MemberMartin Conway
Martin Conway is Professor of Contemporary European History at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow and Tutor in History at Balliol College in Oxford. He is a historian of twentieth-century Europe, who has published a number of books on the history of Belgium, and on broader themes in modern European history, including his most recent book, Western Europe’s Democratic Age, 1945-1968 (Princeton University Press, 2020). He is currently working on a study of male citizenship in twentieth-century Europe, with the working title of Political Men. He is also a former editor of the English Historical Review.
He has held a number of positions of responsibility within Oxford, including the Chair of the Board of the Faculty of History, and the Associate Head of the Humanities Division with responsibility for research. He has also been a member of the Advisory Board of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) in the UK, and of the Research Council of the Free University of Brussels (ULB). He has received research funding from a number of bodies including the Leverhulme Trust, the AHRC, the DFG, and the CNRS.
He is a member of the francophone section of the Royal Academy of Belgium (ARB), and was awarded a College fellowship by the University of Aberystwyth.
