Old UniversityUniversity Museum

Universitätsmuseum Heidelberg

The ground floor of the Old University building, constructed between 1712 and 1728, houses the University Museum. Its three chambers offer an exciting tour through the history of Germany’s oldest university.

The first chamber covers the age of the Electors Palatine from the founding of the university in 1386 to its handover to Baden in 1803. The age of romanticism and the establishment of the modern natural sciences are addressed in the next chamber. Finally, the last chamber examines the events of the 20th century, such as the university’s first admissions of women students and the role of the university in the Third Reich.

Guided audio tours are available upon request in both German and English.
