The Ruperto Carola Campaign – a name that shows personality
Ruperto Carola is the Latin name of Heidelberg University. The university owes this name to two personalities that played an essential role in its history: Rupert I, Elector Palatine, and Charles Frederick, Grand Duke of Baden.
Rupert I, Elector Palatine and Count Palatine of the Rhine, founded Heidelberg University in 1386. Grand Duke Charles Frederick of Baden secured the university's future in the turbulent years at the beginning of the 19th century. The German name of Heidelberg University, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität, and its Latin variant Ruperto Carola, remind us of the two most important men in its history. As does the name of our campaign.
