Hella Bühler Prize 2011

The two medical scientists Dr. Andreas Fischer (right) and Dr. Sven Danckwardt (left) were awarded the 2011 Hella Bühler Prize for their outstanding oncological research. Dr. Andreas Fischer received the prize for his investigations on the formation of vascular malformations in the brain (= cavernomas). The objective of Dr. Danckwardt’s research is to study the basis for the “mysterious” relationship between active blood coagulation and the genesis and metastasization of tumors. The Hella Bühler Prize donated by Heidelberg dentist Dr. Hella Bühler (1910-2002) is designed to support young Heidelberg scientists in continuing and deepening their outstanding work in the field of cancer research. In 2011 the prize was awarded for the sixth time but it is the first year in which two recipients have been selected by the awarding committee. [More...]

A home for a while – the Heidelberg University guest houses

A home for a while – the Heidelberg University guest houses

Visiting scientists or newly appointed professors in search of living quarters during their stay in Heidelberg are welcome at the university guest house. It consists of two building complexes, built in 1997 and 2005 respectively, supported by the “Unterländer Studienfonds” (USTF GmbH), a public endowment of the university. Thanks to the Dr. Ahlheim/Dr. & Mrs. Vogt Foundation, two handicapped-access apartments were also included. The one-to-four room apartments are completely furnished and come with day-to-day essentials. The complex is situated in Neuenheimer Feld, right next to many university and non-university scientific establishments and the university hospital, making it an ideal place to blend both life and work. A room at the international meeting centre of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is available to visiting researchers and their families for them to get to know one another, host parties, or simply join others to wind down the day. The guest houses make it possible to promote international exchange and ensure optimal cooperation among excellent scientists from all over the world. [More...]

Day care centre goes to Green School

Day care centre goes to Green School

Thanks to the initiative of Ms. Karin Kubli, honorary citizen of Heidelberg University, children at the day care centre in Neuenheimer Feld have the opportunity to attend “Green School” at the Botanical Garden one day each year. “Green School” brings the children closer to the world of trees, shrubbery and plants through playful, interactive tours. The routine exchange of the garden instructors and the day care instructors before and after visits to the Botanical Garden strengthens long-term learning.
