Central Research Pool
Through the Central Research Pool, the university supports mainly applications for third-party-funded projects by providing initial funding to both young researchers and established scientists alike.
- Young researchers can obtain funding to prepare proposals to submit to all third-party funding sources.
- Established researchers can request funding to prepare applications for EU and ERC projects as well as for integrated projects with all third-party funding sources.
- The medical faculties do not participate in the Central Research Pool financially and researchers from these faculties are therefore ineligible for funding. The one exception is for EU-related projects within the Medical Faculty Mannheim. Researchers from the Medical Faculty Mannheim should inquire about possible initial funding at the Research Division in Mannheim.
The quality of the research project is the key criterion for the success of an application. Other evaluation criteria include the academic profile of the applicant, the timing, and the formalisation of the application with the third-party funder.
The funds can be used for research assistants, travel costs, material costs, equipment, use fees and workshops. Travel costs for guests are not covered.
Procedure
Applications can be submitted to the Research Division at any time. The Vice Rector for Research makes the decision on the applications. In exceptional cases, the rectorate will make the final decision.
The application paperwork consists of a 3- to 5-page project description, a financial and use plan for the initial funding, a curriculum vitae listing any previous third-party funding received by the applicant, a publications list and a completed application form. The application should be signed by the applicant and as a rule by the institute director and the applicant’s advisor.
The complete set of application documents should be submitted to:
