International Summer School on “Sites of Knowledge” at Heidelberg University

Press Release No. 98/2013
14 May 2013
Organised by the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe” – Young scholars can apply as of now

The question of how and at what locations knowledge is generated is the subject of an international summer school organised by the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” at Heidelberg University this coming August. Young scholars from different disciplines will be given the opportunity to discuss topical research issues in the history of ideas and knowledge with researchers from all over the world. The summer school “Sites of Knowledge: Space, Locality, and Circulation” addresses advanced students and doctoral candidates in the humanities, cultural studies and the social sciences. Applications should be sent to the Cluster by 31 May 2013.

“Is all knowledge local? And if so, how does the situatedness of knowledge preclude claims to ‘truth’ and ‘universality’?” These issues keenly interest the organiser of the summer school, Prof. Dr. Joachim Kurtz, who pursues his research on intellectual history at the Cluster of Excellence. Together with the summer school participants he will attempt to answer these questions and to devise methods for pinpointing and tracing the generation and circulation of knowledge. For this purpose, the programme of the school from 4 to 8 August combines lectures with more interactive elements such as reading groups and writing workshops. A public keynote address will be delivered by Prof. Dr. Christian Jacob of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris (France).
