The members of the University Council have elected Dr. Ulrike Albrecht to chair this body for the next three years. At the beginning of October, the Council of Heidelberg University has entered its fifth period in office. Dr. Albrecht is head of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Department of Strategy and External Relations (Bonn) and has been an external member of the University Council since 2004.

Ulrike Albrecht (b. 1952) studied history and English at the University of Göttingen, where she also did her doctorate in history. Subsequently she joined the academic staff of the Göttingen Institute for Economic and Social History, where she remained until 1993. From 1993 to 1996 she was programme director– with public relations duties, among other things – at the headquarters of the Conference of German Academies of Science and Humanities in Mainz, taking over the post of acting managing director in 1997. That same year she moved to the administration of Heidelberg University to head the Divison of Research and Basic Research Issues. In July 2001 she moved to the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation where – amongst other duties – she is in charge of coordinating strategy discussion and cooperation with national and international funding bodies and academic organisations.

The University Council servces as one of the three central governing bodies of Heidelberg University, alongside the Rectorate and the Senate. According to the State University Law (Landeshochschulgesetz), it is responsible for the university’s development and recommends measures to raise its profile and increase its performance and competitiveness. Among the main functions oft the University Council are nominating and electing both the rector and the registrar, deciding on the University’s structure and development plans as well as approving the annual accounts of the university including its two medical faculties. The University Council has 11 members in all, with five representatives from within the university plus six external members. The external members come mostly from the spheres of business, culture and research funding and enhance the expertise of the Council from their specific perspectives. All members officiate for a period of three years.
