New Master's Programme in Transcultural Studies

Press Release No. 169/2011
1 June 2011
Applying an interdisciplinary approach to research on Asia and Europe

A new Master's programme in "Transcultural Studies" is due to start up at Heidelberg University this coming winter semester 2011/2012. Students will be taking an interdisciplinary perspective on the investigation of cultural exchange and the relations materialising from it. The two-year M.A. programme is organised by the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” and concentrates on these geographic regions. The application deadline for international students is 15 June 2011. German students may apply until the beginning of the winter semester after consulting the programme coordinator.

“The new M.A. programme offers a research-oriented, interdisciplinary course focusing on the humanities, the social sciences and cultural studies,” says programme coordinator Oliver Lamers. “The wide range of teaching in English provides the students with academic skills in an international research environment.” Students will specialise in one of three fields: “Society, Economics and Governance”, “Knowledge, Belief and Religion” or “Visual, Media and Material Culture”. Most of the seminars and lectures will be held by the professors of the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context”.

The M.A. in “Transcultural Studies” is aimed at German and international students who have obtained a B.A., or equivalent, in the humanities or the social sciences. They also require good proficiency in English and two other languages. For more information, go to www.transcultural.uni-hd.de.
